Internet search is the modern day Dewey Decimal System. In the past students needed to learn the Dewey Decimal System to navigate libraries and research information. If our students don't understand how to properly search the internet they will not be able to find the resources to fit their needs. Search engines have helped organize and popularize the internet. The most popular search engine is Google but students should learn to diversify their searching by visiting at least three search engines to see what similar and different sites they find. Search should be treated as an integral part of the research process. Have students print search results from different search engines. How did they get these search results? Why did they choose certain sites? Internet search is evolving into more visual and kid friendly search engines. Try the different search engines below. Search engines have different strengths depending on the information you are looking for. Targeted techniques can help teachers and students quickly find accurate and relevant information.
